Consumer Price Index

August 14, 2008
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 0.8 percent in July, following a 1.1 percent increase in June. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.3 percent, the second straight such increase. Full text: (HTML) (PDF)

Employment Cost Index

July 31, 2008
Total compensation costs for civilian workers increased 0.7 percent, seasonally adjusted, from March to June 2008, the same as the increase in the previous quarter. For the year ended June 2008, compensation costs rose 3.1 percent; the June 2007 12-month percent increase was 3.3 percent. Full text: (HTML) (PDF)

Employment Situation

August 01, 2008
The unemployment rate rose to 5.7 percent, and nonfarm payroll employment continued to trend down in July (-51,000). Employment continued to fall in construction, manufacturing, and several service-providing industries, while health care and mining continued to add jobs. Full text: (HTML) (PDF)

Producer Price Index

August 19, 2008
The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods advanced 1.2 percent in July, seasonally adjusted. This increase followed a 1.8-percent jump in June and a 1.4-percent rise in May. The index for finished goods other than foods and energy advanced 0.7 percent after edging up 0.2 percent in June. Full text: (HTML) (PDF)

Productivity and Costs

August 08, 2008
Productivity increased 2.2 percent in the nonfarm business sector during the second quarter of 2008 as unit labor costs rose 1.3 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rates). In manufacturing, productivity fell 1.4 percent in the second quarter of 2008; unit labor costs jumped 6.1 percent. Full text: (HTML) (PDF)

Real Earnings

August 14, 2008
Real average weekly earnings fell by 0.8 percent in July 2008. A 0.3 percent increase in average hourly earnings was offset by a 0.3 percent decrease in average weekly hours and a 0.9 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes

August 13, 2008
The U.S. Import Price Index increased 1.7 percent in July, after a 2.9 percent rise in June. Both petroleum and nonpetroleum prices contributed to the advance, increasing 4.0 percent and 0.9 percent, respectively. Export prices rose 1.4 percent in July following a 1.0 percent advance the previous month. Full text: (HTML) (PDF)
